It's a battle that I've been fighting for three years, but I just can't get any weight on my daughter.
Her gastro doctor wants her in the 50th percentile for body mass index -- she is in the 1st percentile (although at this past checkup, I think she slipped off the charts altogether.)
Does eating "forbidden" foods affect your kids' weight -- either positively or negatively? When adhering closely to the FODMAPs plan, Kaelin's weigh begins to inch up, albeit very slowly. However, one slip-up can send her weight crashing. At least, that's how it seems.
It took almost four weeks of carefully following the diet to put on one pound, but then in ONE day, she dropped two pounds. Was it because she ate pizza and popcorn and chocolate? Or was it because she skipped lunch (but ate a HUGE dinner with dessert.) Or was it because she also started with a "cold" (no one ever catches these colds she gets, so it may part of the CF...)
Last week, I again started with strict adherence and her weight began moving up slightly. Then she ate forbidden candy on Valentines and she's back down to 50 pounds. She has a severely clogged nose and now says she has a sore throat as well.
As I monitor this, I see two things happen when she eats off-plan. She loses a not-insignificant amount of weight instantly and she is sick. Now, I know that her body will burn more calories fighting off an illness, which is why her gastro doctor is so freaked about her weight to begin with. So it could certainly explain the loss.
But I'm wondering if the illness and bad eating is coincidental or if there is some connection between the diet and her respitory system. Every winter she gets the drippy nose, sore throat, swollen glands (that rarely turn out to be strep throat) and sometimes a cough. I've always thought it was a change in the weather. But maybe it's because it's around Thanksgiving and Christmas and suddenly she is always eating candy and cookies and drinking juice and hot cholcolate (none of which is provided by me. Grrr!)
This morning Kaelin said she loves having a water bottle in her room because she doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night for a drink. My other daughter's endocrinologist told me that THAT is a sign of diabetes, not thirst thoroughout the day. I keep thinking that Kaelin is hypoglycemic but I'm wondering if the constant blanking out and needing to drink overnight could be diabetes. Or if it's just because she ate so much sugar and it's just a one time shock to the system.

The weight issue may be associated with the metabolic problem as her digestive system will not be working to maximum level if it is constantly having to fight toxins in her system. It may have learnt to try and just flush food out as quickly as possible instead of using all the building blocks especially proteins for growing, therefore the clearer you can keep her diet from toxins the quicker the digestive system can heal and ultimately it will learn what suits it best, at that time Kaelin will hopefully feel so much better she will naturally lean towards those foods.
The thirst thing, yes it could be diabetes, have they tested for that. I have asked for Megs to be tested but they keep saying she isn't ill enough as some of her symptoms point towards it. So we plod on, but certainly worth excluding. You can buy urine testing strips over the internet and test her urine for glucose after a sugar load and see over a day if she is showing excess glucose. That shouldn't happen in FM. But otherwise it could be again the body needing to flush out toxins, Megs always drinks more in the evenings which doesn't help trying to get her dry at night.
The bad colds. Now this is an interesting one and I do think now it is a related symptom to fructose as I have noticed alot over the past years that when Megs has a bad reaction she always gets a heavy cold and sometimes almost a gastric flu, her temperature shoots up, she feels and can be sick and terrible catarrh and sore lips and mouth. If you have noticed it then maybe we need to add it to a list on reactions. Certainly as a baby she had cold after flu after cold for years. Maybe I'll start a new section with symptoms and we can all add what symptoms we think may be related. I'm sure there are alot more than just the few classically quoted.
I am going to invent some power shakes which are suitable for FM and see if they help Megs energy levels, maybe they will help Kaelin digestion.

Kaelin has problems with her lips and she gets sores in her mouth. Her glands are almost always swollen, but she doesn't have strep. She runs fevers for no reason. Her white blood cell count is always elevated.
It does sound like Kaelin is fighting toxins. I think her doctors need to rethink the idea that following this diet isn't medically necessary. It will be interesting to hear what Kaelin's pediatrician has to say tomorrow...
I would love a power shake for Kaelin -- it would be fabulous to have something I don't need to cook!

Where are the sores in her mouth. Are they on the inside of the front lip. Have you had inflammtory markers tested CRP and ESR (Blood test) and B12. Does she get night sweats?

If you want to gain her weight.. give her natural and fats contain foods.. butter , yogurt , breed and set the sleeping routine.. give greatest time to sleeping.. if you keep up her diet with veg and non veg. then she recover her weight other wise all medicine have negative effects.. just give her that food which good for liver.....
