Hi all,
Well, turns out baby no 2 also seems to have significant issues with fructose and she, interestingly, is refusing all things containing fructose after her first taste whereas her older sister would happily eat things and then react but happily still eat the same thing again.
Anyway, my question is this, would baby rice made from "wholegrain rice" contain more fructose than baby rice made with "white rice"? When I checked nutritiondata for white and brown rice it said there was no fructose in either but I'm sure I remember hearing that brown rice contains fructose. If it does then that would answer a few questions and resolve a few recent frustrations.
Thanks.

I would expect at least daughter 2 to be HFI at a guess Daughter 1 might be also but perhaps not so severe. It all seems to be the number of genes and which ones are causing the problems. D2 sounds classic HFI though. How old is Daughter 2?

Hi UKBill. Thanks for joining me on the 'other side'!
My youngest is 11 months. And her aversion to sweet tasting foods could suggest HFI but I don't think her symptoms do at all - she gets a red rash on her face to the extent that her skin breaks down and she gets loose stools, doesn't sleep and is grumpy. She doesn't vomit and doesn't show any signs of hypoglycemia. The doctors don't recognise her symptoms as a clinical picture which makes me feel like a neurotic mother although the dietician has been fantastic and very supportive. A good dietician is worth their weight in gold!

Hi Kate, sorry couldn't answer this well as computer been playing up and the ipad isn't good for posting long comments.
I think the problem with the brown rice is that the fructose content is stored around the husk of anything wholegrain so maybe it is higher. But possibly as I think someone said on the other board the fiber content may be a factor too. Looking at the finelli site wholegrain rice fiber content is 7.4g whereas white rice is 2.3g, however this figure drops for boiled rice to 1.6 for both so maybe it is the high fiber if her system is reacting.
Thats a shame if number 2 also has the fructose problem, but as you have said, at least they both can't eat the same foods. I think those that only have one child with the problem find it alot to restrict the diet. I can't remember if you got the gene test done on No 1 but as both are presenting bad reactions it may be worth pushing for it to be done. Addenbrookes at Cambridge do it, I will PM the link to you. I got them to email their form then presented it to our paediatrician who had the blood drawn and sent off.

On doing some googling about something else came across a page that advises wholegrain rice is not good for FM due to the fructans which are stored under the husk so it maybe that that is the answer if your daughter is FM.
