I came across these two papers in my endless search for answers that seem to be dated back to the late 1960s but seem to be very well written and may help to give a few answers on why some, especially the children, don't do well on the low-fodmap diet but may be suffering several sugar malabsorptions due to problems with disaccharide activity in the small intestines.
