According to all that I've read,carrots should be OK because they have more glucose than fructose and no fructans. I did read in places that they contained mannitol but could find no references to this in any scientific analysis. I contacted Monash Uni in Australia and their tests confirmed no mannitol in carrots.. BUT I find them far too sweet to eat. Am I alone??? Sarah.

Hi Sarah, welcome on board and thanks for the poll- what a good idea. Guests please feel free to post your vote on it too.Carrots - like anything I think this may depend on the degree of FM and also maybe the cause of FM / age developed. Those that have it as children seem to be alot more reactive than those that develop it later in life maybe as a result of other illness. Also it may that one has to add in other foods eaten that day. Certainly Megan reacts to carrots so I only ever give her a couple of slices boiled if she has anything, but she is very reactive to fructose. I've not seen anything about mannitol in carrots but there is alot of sucrose, I know that is supposed to be OK for FM but maybe the added total is too high for many. Something else to consider may be the brand of the carrot. In modern food production people go for the small, sweet succulent veg and the chances are these are higher in sugars whereas the old thicker drier carrot may not be. My daughter definitely reacts to carrots. www.thefartingpear.com is a website which has a food search where FM sufferers rate food based on their tolerance. This shows that others react to them too. I depends on tolerance levels though, as Charile says.

It doesn't show on main home page as a poll, but if people click on new topics then it shows with the poll icon.
What I could do though is add a separated section for polls, that way they can all be stored in one section.

Lucky, you must have a different list to us, ours says carrots are ok as they have equal level of fructose / glucose but they are high in fructose 1.4g per 100g so may take over safe limit anyway. I certainly agree they aren't good. Meg can only manage a few slices.
I think you are right to enter your vote based on your son as he is the most reactive, maybe as adults they can cope with that bit more but not the little ones.
Do tell about the canteloupe!!??

Erin can eat about 1/8C of raw carrots which is about 0.45g of fructose without any issues other than allergic shiners and skin rashes (but those could be from so many different things). Any more and we get definite skin and eye reaction plus behavior and gas. At 0.7g we lose her.
