I've been on the HFI boards for a few years but was recently diagnosed with the malabsorption version and not HFI. I was misdiagnosed with HFI and then they decided that it was just reflux. After years of still being sick despite taking reflux medication, I went to a new hospital and they performed tests to check for issues with fructose. I got so sick during that test that they confirmed what it was the entire time. This is becoming prevalent in Germany where I live and there is a store that specialises in HFI products not too far from where I live. That has helped drastically as they can ship directly to the door or to any health store in the area.

Hello, hypotenuse, welcome to the site.
It is very frustrating to be diagnosed with one thing then find out it is another later on. Germany seems to be doing alot of research into genetics for these problems, we are waiting for them to finish the CSID database for my daughter to get DNA tested for that.
So, options have opened up for you hopefully food wise. The main thing to note with FM is that everyone is different and seems to have different tolerance levels, if they suspected HFI you must have very low tolerance level so start slowly and build up gradually.
Feel free to add any info you have and ask any questions, no matter how trivial.
is the food store Frusano? Can you post the link for it for others info please

Frusano is the company. I saw that a few people had issues with the candy on the HFI board. I've only used their ketchup, rice cakes, and a few other items and never had any issues with those. I've cut out fructose for about four months now and liver damage healed from the nexium. I was surprised how many people had elevated liver panels with FM or HFI. It had probably been 6 years since I started eating fructose again after they said it was not HFI and just reflux. Amazing how drastic the change was when I stopped eating it. FM was the one thing I did not want but I do feel much better limiting it.

Yes Mike, my daughter was one of those that seemed to react to their candy, however it was also that age old question of was it something else. I have just looked up the lolly and saw maltodextrin which for us with CSID in the equation could have been the problem, or the flavourings. The trouble is to ship to the UK was expensive so not worth trying again for now. www.frusano.com is the link for anyone who wants to look into their stuff.

Have just tracked you on HFI board so will catch up with your story, think I had temporarily left board around then. Welcome on here. Hopefully your experiences can help others build up a safe diet a we have the added problem of sucrose and starch intolerance so I never know why she is reacting till later so our diet is probably a lot more restrictive than straight FM needs to be.

It may be the flavourings or the dyes. I'm allergic to carrots and I know that is used heavily as a natural dye. One of the reasons that I haven't tried the Frusano or any other naturally dyed candy is the use of that sometimes. I was actually given two guides by the university nutritionist. I can try and see where their information was found. It wasn't much but did have numbers on grams of sugars from what I remember.
