I can't seem to find any answers to this. Is FM something you are born with or does it develop over a period of time. Reading peoples stories on other sites alot seem to be adults then suddenly find they have FM. However Megs showed symptoms from the moment she was weaned.
Does this mean there are different kinds or she just got it earlier?

I might have found an anwer to this: What Causes FM? Anyone at any time from the time of weaning to old age can develop FM. Possible causes include (5): •Inherited or acquired abnormality of fructose transporting protein GLUT-5 (other family members are often affected) •Overuse of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) or fruit juices in children (toddler’s diarrhea) •Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) •Celiac disease •Chemotherapy or radiation (damage of small intestinal mucosa) •Dumping syndrome (rapid stomach emptying) This was on a good page of information www.healthhype.com/nutrition-guide-for-fructose-malabsorption.htmlscroll down to end of list of foods and click on symptoms and mecahnism of fructose malabsorption for this page.. sorry can't paste direct link.

We'll never know if Kaelin had this condition when she was born nor will we know if it was hereditary (she was adopted). I never allowed her to drink apple juice -- I cannot remember exactly what happened to her when she drank it, but I definitely remember that I never gave it to her (and I could always tell when she drank it at preschool.) But most other symptoms like the smelly diapers, the running poos, the shaking -- all of that could be and has been attributed to the pancreatic insufficiency. So I can't say with certainty that Kaelin has always had a problem with FM, other than the complete knowledge that apple juice really did vile things to her...
I do believe that Kaelin's condition is different than the people who suddenly developed FM after getting sick. I'll never be able to find the thread again, but I read through a discussion about when people got FM and what they believed brought it on. For a large percentage of the people, they got FM after an illness that required taking an antibiotic. Those people all seemed to make huge strides after doing an elimination diet and after six weeks or so, could add back in a significant amount of foods that had been making them ill. For those that felt they've always had FM, their symptoms never seemed to improve. Obviously this is not a scientific sampling by any means -- but it does lead me to believe that there may be two different versions of FM. I think there's a lot of research that still needs to be done.
I took Kaelin to a Metabolics/Genetics doctor several weeks ago. She feels that Kaelin could have mitochondria, but said that wouldn't explain the FM. So of course I googled mitochondria as soon as I got home and found that HFI is listed as a carbohydrate mitochondria disorder.
I don't think Kaelin's FM symptoms will ever disappear. I think it does some amount of damage to her system, but slowly over time. People can drink alcohol for weeks or months and not have any damage to liver -- but at some point, they end up with cirrhosis. I worry that Kaelin is sustaining some undetectable damage, until the day that her liver or kidneys or something is beyond repair and doctors will decide that hey, maybe eating fructose, etc does more than cause some stomach pain. Maybe the diet is medically necessary after all...
